Diabetes Medical Treatment

Diabetes: A simple guide to Medical Treatmentdiabetes treatment

Education and knowledge regarding the various modes of treatment is essential in all types of diabetes. Although medical treatment of people is highly individualized, depending on the type of diabetes, whether you have other active complications and your age and general health at time of diagnosis, only a handful of medications have become commonplace.

Type 1 diabetes: Treatment almost always involves the daily injection of insulin, usually a combination of short-acting insulin such as regular or Lispro or Aspart insulin and a longer-acting insulin such as NPH, lente, glargine, detemir, or ultralente insulins.

* Insulin must be given as an injection. If taken by mouth, insulin would be destroyed in the stomach before it could get into the blood where it is needed.

* Most people with type 1 diabetes give these injections to themselves. Even if someone else usually gives you your injections, it is important that you know how to do it in case the other person is not available.

* A trained professional will show you how to store and inject the insulin. Usually this is a nurse who works with the health care provider or a diabetes educator.

* Insulin is usually given in 2 or 3 injections per day, generally around mealtimes. Dosage is individual and is tailored to suit the person. Longer acting insulins are typically administered 1 or 2 times per day.

* It is very important to eat if you have taken insulin, as the insulin will lower your blood sugar regardless of whether you have eaten. If you take insulin without eating, you could have hypoglycemia. This is called an insulin reaction.

* There is an adjustment period while you learn how insulin affects you and how to time your mealtimes and exercise times with your insulin injections to keep your blood sugar level as even as possible.

* Keeping accurate records of your blood sugar levels and insulin dosages is crucial in helping your health care provider take care of your diabetes.

* Eating a consistent, healthy diet appropriate for your size and weight is essential in controlling your blood sugar level.

Type 2 diabetes: Depending on how elevated your blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin are at the time of your diagnosis, you may be given a chance to lower your blood sugar level without medication.

* The best way to do this is to lose weight if you are obese and begin an exercise program.

* This will generally be tried for 3-6 months, and then your blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin will be rechecked. If they remain high, you will be started on an oral medication, usually a sulfonylurea or biguanide (Metformin), to help control your blood sugar level.

* Even if you are on medication, it is still important to eat a healthy diet, lose weight if you are overweight, and engage in moderate physical activity as often as possible.

* Your health care provider will monitor your progress on medication very carefully at first. It is important to get just the right dose of the right medication to get your blood sugar level in the recommended range with the fewest side effects.

* Your doctor may decide to combine two types of medications to get your blood sugar level under control.

* Gradually, even people with type 2 diabetes may require insulin injections to control their blood sugar levels.

* It is becoming more common for people with type 2 diabetes to take a combination of oral medication and insulin injections to control blood sugar levels.

Diabetes Treatment Using Alternative Medicine

The Treatment Of Diabetes Using Alternative Medicine

Although there have been considerable advances in conventional medicine, many people believe strongly in the use of complementary and alternative medicine for many conditions and this is certainly true in the case of diabetes.

diabetes treatment, natural diabetes treatmentComplementary and alternative medicine use a number of products and practices which are not presently considered to be part of the mainstream system of healthcare and the main difference between the two is that complementary medicine is designed to be used alongside conventional treatment while alternative medicine is used instead of conventional treatment.

There are many forms of both complimentary and alternative medicine which are believed to produce beneficial effects but there are others forms can be extremely harmful and, in the case of a potentially serious condition such as diabetes, you should not use either without the knowledge of your doctor. Indeed, you should talk to your doctor about any form of complimentary or alternative medicine which you wish to use so that he can advise you of any possible medical consequences of such treatment.

There are a large number of different types of complimentary and alternative therapy for diabetes including:

1. Guided Imagery. Guided imagery is technique which relaxes the mind and body and develops an awareness of, and an ability to deal with, the body’s response to pain using peaceful images. This can be particularly useful for diabetes suffering with nerve damage.

2. Acupuncture. Acupuncture involves the insertion of needles into different parts of the body and can be used to trigger the release of natural chemical painkillers. It can be especially helpful for diabetes suffering with often painful nerve damage (neuropathy).

3. Magnesium. The exact part played by magnesium in controlling diabetes is poorly understood but it is known that this mineral, which is found in green leaf vegetables, whole grain foods and nuts, plays an important role in many of the body’s functions including functions of the nerves, heart, muscles and bones. It also plays a part in the helping the body to handle glucose and low levels of magnesium are often found in people suffering from diabetes.

4. Ginseng. Ginseng has become very popular popularity recently for the treatment of a whole range of different conditions and is sold widely. There is some evidence from studies using American ginseng that it can reduce glucose levels, but this evidence is not strong enough yet to say just how effective it is as a form of therapy. One problem with ginseng is that it comes in a variety of different forms and strengths and nobody really knows just what amount or strength is needed for therapeutic purposes.

Whatever form of complimentary or alternative medicine you would like to try it is important to remember that you treating a serious and potentially life-threatening condition and that you should consult your doctor before trying any form of therapy.

Diabetes Treatment: Natural Supplements

Natural supplements for the Treatment of Diabetes

This article gives details on the natural treatment of diabetes, including the latest research on possible natural remedies. Tips on diet and exercise changes for dealing with type 1 and 2 diabetes are also provided.

diabetes supplements, natural diabetes treatmentType 1 diabetes is when the production of insulin decreases or is absent. It is an autoimmune disorder usually caused by genetics, chemical secretions, or other factors which are out of a person’s control. However, it can be managed through effective natural therapies, diet and exercise. Type 2 diabetes on the other hand can not only be managed but also prevented through natural remedies that help control blood sugar.

Supplements and herbs for the treatment of diabetes

There are some herbs that are thought to help in the control and treatment of diabetes. Bitter gourd, grown in India, contains plant insulin and if it is taken on an empty stomach, can be effective for diabetes treatment. Coccinia indica, also known as the ‘ivy gourd’ has been found to contain insulin-mimetic properties. Further testing is being done to prove its effectiveness in the treatment of diabetes. Research is also being done into bauhinia forficate, grown in South America is used in a Brazilian herbal remedy and also contains ‘vegetable insulin.’

Aloe vera is grown in arid soil and often used as a skin lotion and for treating burns. Dried aloe vera sap and gel may be able to lower fasting blood glucose levels as well as HbA1c. Natural supplements of magnesium could improve insulin sensitivity. Chromium, found in whole grains, mushrooms, corn oil and brewers yeast has also proved effective. The correct doses of vitamin A and B have helped in managing insulin and the treatment of diabetes. However these have to be taken with care as they could interfere with the absorption of insulin by the cells.

Diet

The first step, however, in the control and treatment of diabetes should always be through diet. Refined sugar, sweets and other sweet food or drinks, fats like butter and hydrogenated vegetable oil should be avoided, along with many processed foods. Alcohol and smoking should be avoided completely, if possible, though an occasional drink is not out of the question.

Salt should be reduced along with red meat and other foods that are full of saturated fats. Whole grains and fresh fruits should be added along with raw vegetables, sprouts, fish and other foods rich in antioxidants. Trans-fats and saturated fats should be replaced with monounsaturated fats like peanut, canola and olive oil.

Other foods that help are cinnamon sticks eaten naturally or in tea and fenugreek seeds soaked in water. The Indian gooseberry and margosa or neem extracts (azadirachta indica - a subtropical tree) have all proved useful in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Garlic has been tested and found to be useful in limited studies. It offers antioxidant properties and micro-circulatory effects and could help reduce blood glucose, increase insulin secretion, and slow its degradation.

Exercise

Walking, any sport, jogging and swimming are particularly helpful. Specific yoga postures help in stretching and relaxing the body along with helping the mind to handle any stress.

Natural Ways To Treat Diabetes

Natural Ways To Treat Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease caused when the body does not properly produce insulin. Seven percent of the population in the United States has diabetes.

natural ways to treat diabetes, natural diabetes treatmentThere are two types of the disease. Type one diabetes is where the body does not produce insulin and type two is where the body resists insulin.

The majority of people diagnosed with this disease have type two. Symptoms of diabetes include extreme thirst, hazy vision, excessive hunger, weight fluctuation, fatigue and frequent urination. Diabetes is often controlled with insulin and prescription drugs, but diet and exercise play a large part in the ability to control the disease. There are also herbs that can help reduce the effects of diabetes.

Ensure a healthy diet by concentrating on foods such as vegetables, grains, fiber and legumes. These foods will help regulate sugar in the blood stream. Avoid junk food and foods that contain sugar such as cakes, cookies and other sweets. Alcohol, tobacco and caffeine should also be avoided to maintain a nourishing diet.

Exercise helps promote good health and combats against the negative effects of diabetes. It is important to exercise regularly and keep an appropriate weight. People who are inactive or overweight have a higher risk factor for diabetes and are prone to suffer from more side effects caused by the disease. It is especially important to exercise to build muscle. Starting a weight program will increase muscle mass which will increase sensitivity to insulin.

There are many herbal remedies recognized for their therapeutic properties of treating diabetes. They are commonly found in pharmacies and grocery stores and can be a great natural remedy. Prickly pear cactus has shown positive results in the treatment of this disease and was recently recognized by the International Diabetes Center as a viable natural remedy. Bitter Melon has been used for years in Asia, Africa and South America for treatment. Garlic will reduce sugar levels and is a healthy way to add flavor to food while benefiting from its curative traits. Other common herbs are ginseng, psyllium, fenugreek, bilberry, dandelion and burdock.
Optimum Diabetics
Vitamin supplements are frequently used to help treat diabetes with the most commonly recommended ones being vitamins B6, C and E. Also, zinc, selenium, alpha lipoic acid, chromium and vanadium are commonly used. Rather than take individual supplements, some patients opt for a multivitamin to add to their diet.

Diabetes is a disease that affects a large portion of the population. The risks associated with it are serious but can be controlled with lifestyle change. Ensuring a well balanced diet and good exercise routine will help in preventing side effects. Also, proper use of herbs, vitamins and natural remedies will help prevent the necessity for more traditional means of medication.

Supplements For Diabetes

Supplements for diabetes - What recent studies say?

Studies have shown that supplements like chromium, alpha lipoic acid & vanadium plays an important role in management of diabetes. This article has covered findings from some of the latest clinical studies published on use of supplements in diabetes.

Diabetes:

diabetes symptoms, natural diabetes treatments

Diabetes is a chronic condition in which body does not produce or produce less insulin compared to healthy individual or body develops resistance to insulin (body does not respond to insulin).

Most foods that we consume finally enter into the blood in form of carbohydrate, fat & protein. From blood, these nutrients enter into cells. Insulin is required for this entry of glucose into cells. Body cells utilize carbohydrate & fat for energy & growth.

Because of less insulin or resistance to insulin in diabetes, blood sugar cannot enter into cells & remain in blood resulting in high blood sugar.

Studies have shown that supplements like chromium, alpha lipoic acid & vanadium plays an important role in the management of diabetes.

Chromium Supplements In Diabetes:
Diabetes is associated with low concentrations of chromium in blood, so, an early, long-term addition of chromium to the standard therapy has been recommended in several studies. Some latest clinical reports also support the safety and therapeutic value of chromium supplementation for the management of high cholesterol and sugar in subjects with diabetes.

Chromium increases insulin receptor numbers & insulin binding to cells. Since chromium acts by increasing insulin efficiency, so lower amount of insulin is required in presence of chromium.

A clinical study published in ‘Diabetes Care. (2006, August)’ has shown that chromium supplementation in subjects with type 2 diabetes significantly improves insulin sensitivity and glucose control. Chromium supplementation also reduced body weight gain and fat accumulation

A latest review article published in Diabetes Technol Ther. 2006 December has mentioned that 13 of 15 clinical studies involving a total of 1,690 subjects reported significant improvement in at least one outcome of glycemic control. (Glycemic control is a medical term used for blood sugar levels in a person with diabetes) Beneficial effects of chromium supplementation included reduced blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels and reduced requirements for drugs for diabetes.

Reduction in blood sugar & improvement in insulin sensitivity with chromium results in decrease risk for diabetes complications.

Alpha Lipoic Acid In Diabetes:
Alpha lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant, which is produced in the body & also present in food. High blood sugar in diabetes increases free radical formation in body, which leads to additional complications of diabetes like atherosclerosis, heart problems, nerve damage & cataract. Antioxidant decreases free radicals in body & decreases risk of complications.

There are number of publications confirming beneficial effect of lipoic acid in therapy of many diseases, including diabetes, atherosclerosis, degenerative processes in neurons, diseases of joints,

A recent clinical study on diabetic patients treated with alpha lipoic acid was published in ‘hormones (Athens). 2006 Oct-Dec 5(4)’. The result of the study has proved that short-term oral alpha-lipoic acid treatment increases peripheral insulin sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Improvement in insulin sensitivity could improve both blood sugar control and cardiovascular risk factors in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Peripheral insulin sensitivity gives an idea about how body cells respond to insulin. In diabetes, because of decrease response to insulin by body cells, blood sugar cannot enter into cells causing high blood glucose. Alpha lipoic acid enhances glucose uptake by cells in type 2 diabetes.

Diabetic neuropathy or nerve damage is a complication of diabetes. It is a progressive disease, which can cause pain, loss of sensation and weakness, in the feet and sometimes in the hands. Studies have shown that alpha lipoic acid is effective in management of diabetic nerve damage called neuropathy and it reduces pain associated with neuropathy.

Vanadium Supplement In Diabetes:
Vanadium is a trace mineral required by the body in small quantities. Numerous studies have shown that vanadium has insulin-like effects in liver, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue. It may improve glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes.

Along with chromium & alpha lipoic acid, some other supplement like evening primrose oil, fenugreek & some herbs also help in management of diabetes.

Diabetes Care for Men and Women

Diabetes Care for Men and Women

Diabetes is a disease that requires special care and treatment as it can affect anyone of any age group…

diabetes care, natural diabetes treatmentDiabetes is a disease that can affect people of any age. You have to live with diabetes and there is no cure for it. Diabetes is directly related to the insulin level in the body. Depending on the secretion and absorption of insulin, the level and effect of diabetes will differ. It is a chronic disease and the reasons may be anything from hereditary to consumption of unbalanced diet. Around 171 million people in the world are found to be diabetic.

Sugar is an essential factor in the blood that gives energy for the body. This sugar is obtained from the food that we eat. Insulin secreted in the pancreas gland is responsible for absorption of blood glucose by the body cells. When the production of insulin is insufficient, then more sugar will stay in the blood and the cells will starve of fuel. If insulin is produced more, the blood glucose will be consumed more and again cells will get tired wanting fuel for further activities. If any of these occurs, then the person is said to be diabetic.

Types of diabetes
There are 3 main types of diabetes. To treat diabetes, you must first know what type of diabetes has affected you.

Gestational diabetes - this starts in the pregnancy and the level of glucose in the blood will be higher. After delivering the baby, this type of diabetes will go away. But even after delivery the mother has to be monitored.

Type 1 diabetes - This is diagnosed in children and young adults. In this type, sufficient insulin will not be produced by the pancreas. Those who suffer from type1 diabetes have to take insulin for the entire life. Nowadays, insulin injections are common and after taking insulin the person can be very normal.

Type 2 diabetes - this is diagnosed in people at the later ages. Due to insufficient nutrition, the insulin is not secreted upto the required level or the cells don’t absorb insulin. As a result, glucose accumulates in the blood and lead to diabetes.

Symptoms
The symptoms of diabetes are similar for both men and women. There are some cases where people are found to be diabetic even if they don’t have any of these symptoms. Diabetes will show symptoms after the depletion of 80% of insulin producing cells. The typical symptoms include

  • Sudden weight loss
  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Excessive hunger
  • Lethargy
  • Wounds in the feet

Many people in the world test for diabetes only when they find wounds that are not healed for a long time in their foot.

Treatment
The only treatment for diabetes is to take nutritional balanced diet, insulin tablets and injections. There is no cure and to prolong life after diagnosing diabetes, the patient must take sufficient insulin that is required to burn the sugar that is produced. The diabetic patients must regularly visit the doctor and check for the sugar levels in the blood. Diet control and regular exercises must be followed to control diabetes.

Care for men and women
Since diabetes affects people of all ages and races, we must take proper care so that we burn up extra sugar in the blood. In certain cases, the blood sugar was under control just by controlling the diet. You must take balanced diet that contains carbohydrates, necessary fat, proteins and minerals. Avoid all fried items and all oils. Exercises are a must to avoid diabetes. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always good for health. Generally women are found to be less aware of diabetes. It is now a myth that women live longer than men.

When a person is affected by diabetes, he/she is prone to many diseases as their immune system becomes weakened. If diabetes is not treated properly, it may lead to heart diseases and kidney failures. Many people also suffer from eye sight problems and nervous problems. Diabetes is a silent killer but if you know how to fight against it, you can conquer the disease and lead a normal life.

Diabetes and Natural Remedies

Do Natural Remedies Really Help Diabetics?

According to the ADA, 2 out of 3 diabetics die from cardiovascular disease or strokes. Insulin and prescribed oral medications control blood sugar levels but do not protect against cardiovascular or other complications. Therefore, many people have turned to natural remedies to help fight the complications associated with Diabetes.

Intro to Diabetes and Natural Remedies
diabetes and natural remedies, natural diabetes treatment
A position statement issued in 2001 by the   (ADA) urged health care providers to speak with their patients about natural remedies and acknowledge when these alternative treatments were effective in treating Diabetes. In the book "Natural Remedies: Their Origins and Uses," Finn Sandberg and Desmond Corrigan state that an increasing percentage of Americans use natural remedies, such as herbal supplements, to improve their health.

Natural remedies such as herbal medicines have been used for as long as people have been populating planet Earth and getting sick. It has only been during the 20th century that synthetic organic chemistry became mainstream and replaced natural remedies as a popular means of treatment. As more and more people turn to alternative medicine and natural remedies, however, the trend in Western medicine may be shifting once again.

About Diabetes

Diabetes the disease actually has four different manifestations. Juvenile Diabetes, or Type 1, is an auto-immune disease that is believed to be genetic. The immune system essentially attacks the pancreas in Juvenile Diabetics and inhibits their bodies’ ability to produce insulin. People with Type 2 Diabetes do produce insulin, but they have much less sensitivity to use that insulin in processing blood glucose. Type 2 Diabetes may be more related to lifestyle than genetics. Though both these types of Diabetes have different causes, the symptom of high blood sugar levels and its related complications are the same.

The two other types of Diabetes are Gestational Diabetes (GD) and a somewhat new condition referred to as Type 1.5. GD is a temporary condition that develops in pregnant women during the second trimester. After women with Gestational Diabetes give birth, the condition goes away, though those women are then at greater risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. Type 1.5 Diabetes is a combination of Types 1 and 2, whereby the pancreas produces less insulin and the body becomes increasingly less sensitive to insulin as well.

The Good News About Natural Remedies

The good news is that natural remedies can do more than control blood sugar levels for diabetics. This is good news because insulin and oral medicines do nothing to control the complications that arise from Diabetes. In fact, many prescribed oral medications cause cardiovascular complications as a possible side effect. This is extremely troubling since, according to the ADA, 2 out of 3 diabetics will die from cardiovascular disease or strokes.

Which Natural Remedies Can Help Diabetics?

Some common natural remedies for diabetics are cinnamon, turmeric, fenugreek and apple cider vinegar. Many people claim that diluting 1-2 Tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in water and drinking this with meals has reduced their blood sugar levels post-meal. These spices and foods are beneficial in increasing circulation and in lowering blood sugar levels.

Exercise is also widely accepted as an effective natural remedy in controlling Diabetes. Experts recommend 20-30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise at least four times per week to stabilize blood sugar levels and decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. Even walking for just thirty minutes each day has been shown to help diabetics manage their blood sugar levels.

Other effective natural remedies for diabetics are vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements. These have been proven to protect against infections, help cellular regeneration, increase insulin sensitivity and more. In a recent study by two universities in North Carolina, doctors discovered that a daily vitamin and mineral supplement made a big difference in decreasing the frequency and number of infections suffered by Type 2 diabetics.

Choosing an Herbal Supplement for Diabetics

There are many herbal supplements and natural remedies on the market for diabetics, although few do more than treat the symptom of high blood sugar levels. Diabetics should look for herbal supplements and natural remedies that increase immune system function, aid in anti-inflammation, cause cellular regeneration, battle oxidative stress and help repair the cardiovascular system. If left unmanaged, Diabetes and its complications can be extremely dangerous; nowadays, proper management means more than just managing high blood sugar levels.
